Exhibition installation “The Hands that Sew”

Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum
Casa Capell
Installation

Between 1917 and 1968, Casa Balenciaga carried out its work across Spain and France, weaving not only haute couture creations but also a vast community of more than 2,000 workers. Seamstresses, apprentices, dressmakers, pressers, models, and saleswomen sustained—stitch by stitch—the prestige of a universal name. The research project The Hands that Sews, promoted by the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga, brings back their names, faces, and experiences through photographs, letters, and objects that reveal the human dimension behind every creation.

The textile installation by artist Susana Blasco offers a sensitive journey through time and memory, focusing on the hands—mostly women’s hands—that shaped excellence. A delicate and necessary tribute that honours craftsmanship, invisible dedication, and the stories that deserve to stand alongside the name of Cristóbal Balenciaga.
